ABOUT the society



The Society was founded in 1960 to promote and encourage the cultivation of dahlias. The Dahlia Society of Victoria is registered as an Incorporated Association with Consumer Affairs Victoria, Registered Number A0010711F.  It has been helping members and others to grow, show and enjoy dahlias for over 60 years.

The Society conducts events and activities for both members and the public, including

    • Monthly member meetings from September to May
    • Member dahlia auctions at the monthly meetings
    • Mini shows at the monthly meetings
    • The State Dahlia Show each February
    • Public sales and auctions
    • Field trips and garden visits
    • Workshops at meetings and field trips

In addition to the practical, positive advice given by experienced growers and exhibitors at these activities, members get the following benefits

    • Monthly eNewsletter
    • Free entry to the annual State Dahlia Show
    • Colour magazine posted twice a year
    • A welcome pack for new members

The Society's Rules of Association are registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria. The Rules define the purposes and powers of the association, membership rights and privileges, grievance and disciplinary procedures, conduct of meetings, committee roles and responsibilities and financial management requirements.

All committee members and officers of the Society are volunteers, elected each year at the Annual General Meeting.

The Society recognises outstanding contributions by members with Life Membership and other awards for service to the Society and its purposes.

Organisations including Garden Clubs and Horticultural Societies may become members of the the Dahlia Society of Victoria. The Society is also affiliated with other organisations that have similar interests.

At each Annual General Meeting the President of the Society presents an Annual Report for the preceding financial year, which ends on 31 March.  Follow the link for the latest President's Report.

      The following publications can be purchased by members from the online shop or on the membership application form for new members:

      • Fifty Years - a comprehensive history of The Society from 1960 to 2010 by Les Lawson
      • Dahlias in Australia - a comprehensive guide by John Menzel
      • Dahlias of Today - a colourful annual review of US dahlias from the Puget Sound Dahlia Association
      • Dahlias - a Monthly Guide - A month by month guide to all aspects of Dahlia cultivation published by the Puget Sound Dahlia Association.

        The Society also publishes information on dahlias and DSV events on Facebook and Instagram. Members receive an eNewsletter sent by email each month and DAHLIAS, an A5 colour magazine posted in April and November.
